Signed and dated etching in plate lower right: "Whistler 1859" by James A. McNeill Whistler c. 1859 Kennedy 38, i/ii Printed in black ink on Japon paper, similar works hang in major metropolitan museums of art.
This plate was one of the sixteen etchings, also known as the Thames Set. Inspired both by the new enthusiasm for realism and by etchings like those of Meryon, as well as by his excitement at finding a new quality of light and of the picturesque, Whistler made a series of etchings showing the life and atmosphere along the poorest section of the Thames East from London Bridge.
